Johannes Brahms

Born: Hamburg, Germany, 7 May 1833 – Died: Vienna, Austria, 3 April 1897

One of The Three B’s (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms) of traditional western music, Brahms made significant contributions with works for solo and ensemble performances. As a composer bridging the Classical and Romantic musical periods, some his most famous works include:

  • Brahm’s Lullaby – Wiegenlied  (Art Song:  Guten Abend, Gute Nacht…)
  • Symphony No. 1 in C Minor
  • Symphony No. 3 in F Major
  • A German Requiem (a large choral and orchestra work)
  • Violin Concerto in D Major
  • Hungarian Dances (originally for pianos; popular orchestrations)
  • Variations on a Theme by Paganini (piano)
