Remembering Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007)
“I think a life in music is a life beautifully spent and this is what I have devoted my life to…”
With a career spanning decades it is difficult to imagine that there are those who have not heard of or heard the wonderful singing of Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti. For opera fans and fans of great singing he was at the top of a very short list of superb singers during the second half of the last century and into the present (his career began in the early 1960’s.). He moved me and my family with his music and his person – we will miss him.
While opera is a wonderful medium my favorite recordings of singers are almost always recordings where the singer is in ‘recital’ – in these cases we have a singer and an accompanist (perhaps an orchestra) work to take us to new places of heart, spirit and mind without the use of sets, costumes and a large company of supporting musicians. This is certainly the case for the singing of Luciano Pavarotti. I believe that I am not alone when I say the the voice of this maestro was so unique that there were no other contemporary singers whose vocal sound could match his; there are certainly singers who had comparable artistry, but, the glorious, golden, inspiring voice of Pavarotti is what I will remember.
In addition to his many recordings Pavarotti also explored the big screen – in Yes, Giorgio we get a glimpse of situations that reflect his real life – an incredible career filled with music, challenges and love. For an introduction to his singing I suggest that you consider locating his Neopolitan songs CD. The Essential Pavarotti contains a mix of both Neopolitan Art Songs and operatic arias (including: La Donna È Mobile, Che Gelida Manina, E Lucevan Le Stelle, and Nessun Dorma – one of the best known of all arias.) At the time this page was created there were over 800 product links for Pavarotti at Amazon – a few products are listed below.
